Oyo Govt. Pledges Support to Women in IT

The Oyo State Government on Tuesday said it would continue to lend support to women in the state regardless of their social, professional, political or religious affiliations.

The Commissioner for Information, Culture & Toursim, Dr. Wasiu Olatunbosun said this in Ibadan at the inauguration of new executives of Nigeria Women in Information Technology, an affiliate of Nigeria Computer Society.

The Commissioner added that the State Government took economic empowerment of women crucial, which will foster domestic harmony.

He said, “The Oyo State Government believes that women must be at the forefront of efforts to accelerate economic empowerment of women. The present administration under Engr. Seyi Makinde has been taking steps towards gender equality and inclusive governance.”

“The government since inception embarked on different initiatives to ensure financial independence for women, which is critical to taking charge of their own lives.”

He urged members of NIWIT to support the present administration, saying the state is willing to support women in information technology.

Also speaking at the event, the Special Assistant to Governor Makinde on Information Technology, Mr. Bayo Akande stressed that Oyo State Government’s door is opened to work with NIWIT.

He described his principal, Governor Seyi Makinde has an IT enthusiast, whose love for the field has birthed ICT development in the state through various policies, Education.

He added that e-governance has given room for a lot of digitization, which has gotten rid of paper works.

The Governor’s aide said Oyo state was voted best ICT compliant state in the country.

Speaking earlier, Mrs. Bosede Owolabi- the State Coordinator, NIWIT, said the association is ready to work with relevant parastatals in Oyo state to promote IT skills among girls and women in Nigeria towards solving societal problems.

She added that the association is considering ways to expand its membership through capacity building and training opportunities for its members.

The event was graced by a Professor of Computer Science and wife to a renowned Professor of Literature, Nike Osofisan.

Also at the event was the National President of NIWIT, Mrs. Dele Osibo among others.
